VW, Olympics ready to Amarok

VW's Olympic truck sets Guinness Record in Russia

Volkswagen is the official auto sponsor of the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. The automaker is supplying over 3,000 vehicles to keep the Games moving, but by far the coolest vehicle in the fleet is the Polar Expedition Amarok.

And to prove just how cool a vehicle this is, nine people in three Amarok's embarked on an expedition across Russia.

Travelling east from Moscow, the convoy travelled nearly 10,000 miles to the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky during the 66-day adventure. The trek actually set a Guinness world record along the way: the longest off-road journey through a single country.

The specially-built Amaroks were based on an existing consumer truck, with a handful of upgrades and modifications, in order to tackle the deep cold and extreme terrain.

Both the front and rear suspensions were replaced with heavy-duty shocks, and the tires that were added were so massive that cut-outs had to be made on the fenders to accommodate the larger wheels.

A roll cage was added to the interior, and extra navigation capabilities were added. The 2.0L turbo-diesel engine, though, remained mostly stock, in order to prove its out-of-the-box reliability, with its 175-horsepower and 309 lbs-ft of torque.

A consumer version, the Amarok Sochi Special Edition, is available for purchase, if you live in Russia.
